Moran Aunts and Uncles visit

All the Morans came to town last weekend. They were very excited to meet Matthew and to have the whole family together for the 4th of July weekend. On Saturday everyone came by the house to see Matthew for the first time and Daddy made an awesome BBQ lunch for everyone. Here are the boys at work on the grill.
All Matthew's aunts and uncles brought him a really great gift. He got a basket full of books, toys, stuffed animals, and clothes that were pinned to a clothesline that just kept coming and coming and coming out of the basket. Everyone was very generous and Matthew got some of his cutest clothes yet.
Then on Sunday we went over to Clearwater where the hotels were and we hung out by the pool while Suzy held Matthew indoors for a bit while he napped. We went for a yummy Thai dinner to celebrate Adina's birthday, then took a walk around sunset, and everyone played games back in the hotel. I can't give you the rundown on game night because Matthew and I took a nap in the second hotel room before we headed back home.
Here are all Matthew's newest family members.

Fun around the house

We have had a lot of fun with our baby boy in these first few weeks. Alex is a great daddy. He has been a great help to me, letting me rest at times and supporting me in breastfeeding, running errands and doing shopping, cleaning the house, walking Maggie and Matthew around the neighborhood.
Matthew is a little slow to fall asleep in the evenings, but has been a pretty good sleeper overnight. We nap a lot during the day, but Matthew has started being more alert during the day too, which is fun. Matthew likes to go for walks and do baby exercises. He is a pretty agreeable baby and likes to be held by everyone who comes to see him. He only fusses when he is tired and is fighting sleep, and grunts through gas pains but doesn't cry. He likes hang out with his daddy in the evenings and likes to snuggle on mommy's chest.

Here is Matthew getting his first bath. He enjoyed the second one much more, but we didn't have a camera ready.
Here is Matthew going for a walk with Mommy and Maggie.

Here is Matthew doing his workouts with daddy, and interacting with his first toy.

Welcome to the world, Matthew!

It has taken me 3 weeks to blog about our dear boy's birth but better late than never.

During the last week of school I could feel Matthew was on his way. I was hoping to make it to the end of the school year, but Matthew had other plans. I'm glad because summer came a few days early for me!

On Tuesday, June 7th I managed to work my way into the McKitrick Teachers vs 5th grade All-Stars kickball game. I was told I was not allowed to play, so we determined 3rd base coach would be my spot. And I did coach 3rd base, but somehow found my way into short-stop/shallow left field. Of course I didn't run... I just stood there and all the balls that came to me I caught. No harm, no foul. I didn't even kick really, except the deep bomb in the bottom of the last inning. I had a pinch runner. For some reason, all the teachers and staff felt that my involvement in the game would trigger labor. Coincidentally, I did go into labor that day, but certainly not because of anything physically taxing in that game.... that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

After school I met with my sub for next year and finished taking down my room and readying things for summer... just in case I didn't make it back in to school. I was tired at the end of the day, and started having mild contractions... I think I told Janice I didn't feel right. I decided to take our class pet, Vinny the Guinea Pig, home just in case and he needed a trip to the vet to take care of a cyst before he headed to his summer vacation home. So already feeling hot, dirty, tired, and sore from a long day it was off to the vet. On my way there my pregnancy brain realized I didn't have an appointment but thought I'd pop in anyway. I rubbed my pregger belly and told them of my immediate need to make sure Vinny was cared for today. They graciously decided to squeeze me in, but it took 2 hours to find time in between other patients. So while I waited at the vet until 6:30 I started having contractions. I was so exhausted I didn't bother timing them, in truth I didn't know if they were the real deal.

When I finally headed home all I could think of was getting a nice shower and laying down on the couch... and maybe a check on the timing of the contractions. I walked in the door to the smell of Maggie's diarrhea, a byproduct of the bone Alex saved and fed her after cooking Boston Butt at the firestation. My gigantic belly and my heightened sense of smell made cleaning up her mess 1 of 2 nearly impossible. I left the mess in Alex's bathroom for him to clean up. I took a shower, finally feeling good, and came downstairs to find Maggie's ass had exploded once again. I thew her out of the house, cleaned it up again, and finally sat down at 8:00 after a long day.

I started timing my contractions and they were about 11 minutes apart, then 7 minutes, then 9 minutes, then 10. The intensity was to the point I had to concentrate on my breathing to get through them, but I still wasn't convinced these were the real thing. Alex got home from his job around 10:30 and we went to bed at 11:00 because I told Alex I needed to sleep for work in the morning, to which he said I was nuts. I honestly thought that I was just tired and exhausted and if I went to sleep all would return to normal in the morning. We slept for a while, contractions waking me about every 20 minutes, then at 1:00 I woke with strong contractions 4 minutes apart. These contractions were more intense and were coming really close together, increasing to 3 and 2.5 minutes, then back to 4 minutes. We called the OB around 2:00 but through an issue with her page, she took almost 45 minutes to call back. When we finally spoke to the dr. she told me what I described sounded like real contractions and I could come in or wait... whatever I was comfortable with. Around 3:15 Alex and I headed to the hospital. Of course I only had 2 contractions on the way there, and I was sure I would get there and they would laugh at my rookie mom self and tell me to go home.

They admitted me at 4 cm and told me I was definitely in labor and would get to stay! By 5:30 I was given my epidural so I was about 12 hours into labor contraction-wise. They told us to get some sleep and rest up because we would need it. Alex's heeded their advice... I was all over my phone texting everyone I knew. My mom left what was to be her last day of work before she retired, too excited to do any work, and I was so happy to welcome her into the labor and delivery room. My labor didn't progress much past 5 cm so they gave me pitocin to increase the strength of the contractions.
All smiles in between contractions

Around 10:30 I started having pressure, which eventually became pain. I was feeling contractions, which the nurses and anesthesiologist told me I could fix with a push of a pain relief button. They added some extra meds and said I'd feel better in 20 minutes. 20 min later I felt worse, so they gave me new meds, telling me I'd feel better in 20 minutes. This 20 minute cycle continued for 2 hours and I was in intense pain, crying and balling up during each contraction. The pitocin they gave me to intensify the contractions worked and I felt everything. I quickly moved from 6 to 9 cm, at which time they decided to redo the epidural. The catheter had come out of the epidural space so all the meds in me were not doing their job. Once I had my second epidural I was feeling good, only pressure of contractions but no pain. I finally slept and was at 10 cm for an hour and a half while we waited for our baby to work his way through my pelvis. I pushed for 20 minutes, some of the greatest anticipation moments of my life. At 2:36 on Wednesday, June 8th, the most precious thing I have ever seen was placed on my chest. Matthew Alexander Moran was born, weighing 6lb 7oz and measuring 19.5 inches. He had a top-notch set of lungs and great color.
There are no words to describe the next hour. So many people came and went, checking on and cleaning Matthew, working on me, our new family adjusting to all the emotions and beautiful sights of our new baby.
The next two days were tiring, but great. Our hospital stay was as good as it could be... we ate like we hadn't had food in weeks, and every time I thought I'd get a minute to myself someone would come in needing something. Breastfeeding was underway, and Matthew was already quite the snuggler. We came home on Friday and our home is forever changed!

All we need now is the BABY

This last week was a lot of fun for Alex and me. We finished buying the last "few" things on our baby-preparedness list. I'm sure we got a lot we probably won't end up needing, but I'm such a planner that I am happy to have everything just in case... and this is the first baby so he gets a little spoiled. Thanks to so many generous people in our lives we had a lot of gift cards and were able to use those to pay for much of what we still needed. We also had some cash stockpiled that we put away whenever we had some extra just for these baby necessities we knew we'd need.

Here is the nursery... full of clothes, blankets, bibs, burp cloths, diapers, wipes, towels, books, toys, and so much more! We went with the firetruck theme and I think it came out really, really cute. I did the decorating when Alex was working and I'm really excited for him to see it for the first time when we comes home in a couple days. It is firetrucks and dogs- two things Alex really loves! If I know my baby boy and my husband like I think I do this boy will want to be just like his daddy. I can't wait to see them together and I think our son will really like his room someday.

And we had two other things to get that aren't for the baby, but are things we wanted for ourselves when we add this baby to the family. The first was a love seat that completes the den. The sofa reclines and gives us an extra sitting option in our small home. I can picture myself holding the baby in this spot... and can picture Alex relaxing with the baby while playing his video games. The other thing we need to get is a new camera. The one we have now is a little old and the battery lasts for about 10 minutes. Not good when we know we'll want to get all our labor, delivery, and hospital pictures without worry. Also we want to get really great pictures of our precious baby so we'll get a new camera this week.

Here is the new couch, with pillows I bought but may be returning... I am test driving them this weekend.

This baby will have some amazing grandparents!

Our parents have been so good to us lately.

My mom bought us a beautiful glider and ottoman for the nursery. I can't tell you how many of my baby pictures show my mom rocking me in her rocking chair. I know those were precious moments for my mom and I'm sure that is why she was so eager to select a chair for me and my baby to enjoy too. Silly Alex thought this was his new video game chair. I had to tell him no!
A gift from "Granna"

Alex's parents bought us the crib and dresser, which is a beautiful cherry wood. I thought that was generous enough but this last weekend when I came home from Lori's shower I saw that Alex's dad had purchased an awesome jogging stroller and car seat! Maggie and I tried the stroller out yesterday on our walk. A very smooth ride and moved very easily through the grass. Maggie walked right next to it, was calm, and didn't pull on me. She approves, even when she noticed all the people out walking giving us weird looks for walking a baby-less stroller. This jogging stroller is great because it can lock the car seat in so we can take walks using the car seat and before the baby is big enough for the stroller alone.
Gifts from "The Grands"

And my Aunt Anne- not this baby's grandparent, but his Great Aunt. She had Lori and I each pick out a Moses basket and cradle. Right now it is set up in our room which is where we will likely have the baby for the first little bit of time. And the basket is very portable so I can move it downstairs and have a little place for the baby to rest or lie while I do little things. Oh and I know when the baby comes the pillow, blanket, and bear can't be in there!

Showered with blessings

So much has gone on lately and I have been really bad about blogging. But it is not all my fault. I haven't taken pictures and we all know what happens when you are left waiting for other to share their pictures.

Shower #1 was at my school. My friend Janice and all the 4th grade teachers did a wonderful job throwing me a shower. So many teachers took time out of their day to stop by and send their well wishes and lots of generous gifts. We got a bunch of gift cards to Babies r us and target, lots of cute clothes and an assortment of baby essentials, diapers, and a Pack n Play from 4th grade. Sadly no pictures to share. My mom was there and took some but she doesn't have a camera cord so I can never get her pictures.
Shower #2 was for Lori and her friends. I felt super pregnant and made her look like she had a flat stomach when she stood next to me! Her friend, Stacey, came all the way from the East coast of FL and with my mom threw a beautiful shower.

Shower #3 was for me and was the day after Lori's. My best friend, Jenn, did a beautiful job throwing a very classy and yummy shower. I was so glad Lori was able to be there and my Aunt Anne came for the weekend too. Everyone was so incredibly generous and we got all sorts of wonderful gifts. Lots of clothes, a baby bjorn and a bouncer, diapers, a moses basket and cradle, an assortment of books to start our baby library, a monogrammed blanket, blankets and a changing pad and diaper genie... and so much more that I can't even remember right now.
